Docker Desktop Installation And Configuration
How to install Docker Desktop and confirm that Docker is ready for local practice.
Docker Desktop is the easiest way to start using Docker on Windows and macOS.
It gives you the Docker Engine, Docker CLI, Docker Compose support, and a desktop dashboard for viewing containers and images. Even if you mostly work from the terminal, Docker Desktop is useful because it manages the local Docker environment for you.
Install Docker Desktop
Download Docker Desktop from the official Docker website and choose the version for your operating system.
During installation, keep the default options unless you have a specific reason to change them. On Windows, Docker Desktop usually uses WSL 2, which lets Docker run Linux containers efficiently.
After installation, restart your machine if Docker asks for it.
Start Docker Desktop
Open Docker Desktop and wait until it shows that Docker is running.
The first startup can take a little time because Docker prepares its internal environment. Once Docker is ready, open a terminal and check the installation.
docker versionThis should show both client and server information.
The client is the Docker CLI on your machine. The server is the Docker Engine that actually runs containers.
Run the first test container
Use the hello-world image to confirm Docker can pull and run images.
docker run hello-worldDocker will look for the image locally. If it is not present, Docker downloads it from Docker Hub and starts a small test container.
If the command prints a success message, your Docker setup is working.
Useful Docker Desktop settings
For beginner practice, the default settings are usually enough. Still, it is good to know where the important settings live.
| Setting | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Resources | Controls CPU, memory, and disk available to Docker |
| WSL Integration | Lets Windows terminals use Docker through WSL |
| Containers | Shows running and stopped containers |
| Images | Shows downloaded and built images |
| Volumes | Shows stored data used by containers |
If containers feel slow, check the resource settings. If Docker commands do not work in a Windows terminal, check WSL integration.
Common first problems
Sometimes Docker Desktop installs correctly but commands still fail.
Common causes include:
- Docker Desktop is installed but not running
- The terminal was opened before Docker was installed
- WSL 2 is not enabled correctly on Windows
- Virtualization is disabled in BIOS
- Your user account does not have permission to use Docker
Close the terminal, start Docker Desktop, then open a fresh terminal and try again.
Clean first workflow
After Docker Desktop is ready, practice this short flow:
docker version
docker run hello-world
docker ps
docker ps -a
docker imagesThis confirms that Docker can run containers and that you can inspect containers and images.
Docker Desktop is only the setup layer. The real learning begins in the terminal, where you run containers and build images yourself.
